Owensboro made fairly easy work of their 9th District boys’ basketball opener, steadily pulling away throughout the game for a 67-42 home victory over Daviess County on Friday night.

It wasn’t their cleanest game, but the Red Devils (3-1) overcame a slow start and used a balanced attack to hand the Panthers (3-2) their second loss.

“We missed 13 layups – that killed us,” said OHS head coach Rod Drake. “Of course, it’s always good to get the first district win. I thought they all played pretty well. It was a total team effort – I thought the next man stepped up.”

Eleven players scored for Owensboro, with 30 points coming from their bench. Starter Amari Wales and sixth-man Jaiden Greathouse led the Red Devils with 10 points each.

Much of the OHS offense was set up by a quick and aggressive defense. The Panthers ended the night with 26 turnovers that turned into 23 points for the Red Devils.

“Offensively we did what we wanted to do,” Drake said. “Defensively we played pretty well and attacked the zone. I thought overall we played pretty well tonight.”

With Gavin Wimsatt getting in early foul trouble, Owensboro had to shift from their normal offensive strategy. Even with him sidelined, they jumped out to a 16-8 advantage after the first quarter and a 29-16 lead at the half.

“First quarter I thought we were a little slow, especially since we had to play without Gavin,” Drake said. “We had to adjust to that, but I thought the rest of the way we played our style of basketball. We increased the lead, which we wanted to do at halftime.”

Daviess County’s Ryan Thomson finished with a game-high 14 points, while Camron Johnson led all players with 10 rebounds.

Both teams will be in action Saturday at the Sportscenter in the Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn River City Roundup. Owensboro plays Castle (Ind.) at 11 a.m., while Daviess County plays Tell City (Ind.) at 7 p.m.
