This is a story in a series on local high school athletes signing to continue their athletic and academic careers at the next level.

Daviess County’s Greysee Whiteker will head southeast next year and hit the softball diamond for University of the Cumberlands after she wraps up her career as a DC Lady Panther.

Whiteker saw action in 14 games in 2019 as she allowed eight earned runs in 33.2 IP. She finished 5-1 and added a save to go with 21 strikeouts and just nine walks.

How does it feel to finally know where you’re going to attend next year and to make it official?

It feels good to know all my hard work has paid off. I feel like I don’t have so much stress on me anymore and I can really enjoy my senior year and experience the love of the game, more like I did when I was younger.

Why did you choose the school you did?

It was a tough decision, and I had several good offers, but I choose Cumberland’s because of their nursing program and because of Coach Dillender and Coach Rich.  The coaches were also a big part of choosing this school because I loved how friendly they were. They loved to joke around but they also know when to be serious and get things done.  I also loved how it gave me all the feel of a big school but with small class sizes.

What stood out about the program and the coaches?

What stood out to me was how the school was really behind the program, the facilities are outstanding. When talking to Coach Dillender, she really made it clear that I could go play there and pursue my academic career in nursing, which most coaches said wasn’t possible. My biggest decision-maker was I didn’t want to just pitch so when Coach Dillender told me I would have opportunities outside of pitching, I knew that Cumberlands was going to be a good fit for me.

What are you going to study?

I am going to study nursing in hopes of becoming a nurse anesthetist.

What are you going to miss about your team and school?

I am going to miss the team trips we have and how we always find ways to have fun. I am going to miss all my coaches and I thank them every day for pushing me to become the best player I can. I especially want to thank Coach Biggs for helping me find my home to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of the Cumberlands.
