Multiple law enforcement and first response agencies responded to a three-vehicle accident Saturday afternoon in the 5400 block of Frederica Street. The accident, which involved a semi truck and two other vehicles, left at least three people injured, though officials believe the injuries to be non life-threatening at this time.

According to a press release sent by the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office, the accident took place at 2:05 p.m. when Ann Melton, 80, attempted to make a northbound, left-hand turn from Martin Luther King Loop onto Frederica Street. At that time, Melton pulled out in front of a semi-truck being driven by Brian Kawas, 29.

The release states that Kawas lost control of the truck as it continued southbound on Frederica St. and began “sliding sideways down the roadway.”

“Another vehicle operated by Kyle Lashley was traveling northbound on U.S. 431 saw the collision occur and stopped in the roadways the semi truck was sliding in his direction,” the release states. “Lashley was unable to get out of the path of the semi and was hit head-on by the semi.”

DCSO said the front ends of all three vehicles sustained heavy damage as a result of the wreck, and that debris was scattered across 100 yards of the roadway.

The semi also sustained a large fuel and oil leak that was determined hazardous, and emergency crews had to shut down that portion of the roadway for several hours while they cleaned up the toxic liquids.

“Mr. and Mrs. Lashley were transported by ambulance to the hospital for non life-threatening injuries sustained in the wreck,” the report said.

Melton was also reportedly injured, though Kawas was not. Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash.

Other agencies that responded to the wreck include the Daviess County Fire Department, Owensboro Police Department, Airport-Sorgho Fire Department, Utica Fire Department and AMR Ambulance.
