What began as a one-person insurance agency has grown into a larger operation after Maddox Insurance purchased Baize Insurance, allowing owner Jordan Maddox to expand his business while continuing to provide local, independent insurance services.
Founded in 2018, Maddox Insurance offers home, auto, life, commercial, farm, and recreational vehicle insurance through more than a dozen insurance carriers.
Before opening his own agency, Maddox spent nine years working as a captive insurance agent, representing a single carrier. He said becoming an independent agent gave him the flexibility to better serve his clients by matching them with coverage that best fits their needs.
“I found that if I could sell as an independent agent and have multiple carriers, I could help more of my clients and find them excellent carriers that fit their needs,” Maddox said.
The agency reached a significant milestone earlier this year when Maddox purchased Baize Insurance, a longtime Owensboro agency that had served the community for more than four decades.
Maddox said he had always hoped to purchase an agency but had never found the right opportunity until learning Baize Insurance owner Bobbi Baize Kenady was preparing to retire.
After meeting with Kenady, Maddox said the two quickly realized they shared similar values and approaches to serving clients, making the transition a natural fit.
He completed the purchase at the end of December, and Kenady remained with the agency through the end of March before retiring after more than 42 years with Baize Insurance.
The acquisition also brought Maddox Insurance to its new office at 2803 Veach Road.
Maddox said purchasing the building allowed longtime Baize Insurance clients to continue visiting the office they were familiar with while giving his growing agency a permanent home after previously operating from a smaller rented office on Edna Court.
As the agency has grown, so has its staff.
Ashley Roberts, who previously worked part-time from home, joined the office full-time following the acquisition. More recently, Crystal Crabtree joined the agency to help serve its expanding customer base.
Maddox said one of the agency’s biggest strengths is taking time to understand each client’s individual insurance needs.
Rather than simply selling policies, he said the agency conducts comprehensive insurance reviews to identify potential coverage gaps and recommend protection that fits each client’s situation.
“We’re a big believer in having the proper liability limits and, when appropriate, an umbrella policy that can protect the assets our clients have worked hard to acquire,” he said.
A Daviess County High School graduate, Maddox earned a finance degree from Western Kentucky University before beginning his insurance career in Nashville in 2009. After spending seven years there, he returned to Owensboro in 2016 and opened Maddox Insurance two years later.
Maddox said being locally owned gives the agency an opportunity to build lasting relationships with clients while providing personal service they may not find elsewhere.
“Operating a locally owned business in Owensboro means we’re serving the people and families who have helped shape us,” Maddox said. “For us, writing insurance has never been just about writing policies. It’s about protecting the homes and families of our community.”
Looking ahead, Maddox said he hopes to continue growing the agency while maintaining the personalized service that has helped build its reputation.
“As an independent agency, I have over a dozen carriers that I sell,” he said. “Each carrier has a little different appetite, so I can find the right fit for each client.”
