At approximately 12:45 p.m. Owensboro Fire Department received a call about a structure fire in the 1200 block of Maple Avenue.

According to Fire Chief Steven Mitchell, the fire was contained to a single bedroom in the back of the house. The OFD fire team rescued multiple pets.

Mitchell said two cats were put on oxygen and are being taken to a local veterinarian.

“The occupant got out of the home unharmed,” Mitchell said. “All of the animals are in little kennels.”

According to Mitchell, the fire investigator is conducting interviews and will go in the home soon to determine a cause. OFD should know what caused the fire by Monday.

OFD did call the Owensboro Police Department after the homeowner became disruptive at the scene.

“Just like we experience with a lot of these situations, the homeowner got a little excited and wanted to go back in there to get her pets,” Mitchell said. “But we took care of that and asked her to calm down, telling her, ‘We will go inside and get your pets. That’s our job. You just stay here and we’ll take care of all that.'”

By the time OPD arrived on scene, the situation had been taken care of, he said.

“She was very worried about her pets being inside the house.”
