Note: An earlier version of this story was published after Monday morning’s press conference during which Gov. Andy Beshear said a closure announcement was expected by the end of the week. This story has been update to reflect Beshear’s announcement Monday afternoon.

Child care centers across Kentucky will close by the end of business on Friday, as announced by Gov. Andy Beshear Monday afternoon.

“That’s going to give parents this week to make sure that they can take the steps that they need,” Beshear said. “We’re going to have some exceptions in the policy to health care workers. There’s going to be some on-site employer exceptions.”

“I know that it’s going to be hard. Everything I’ve announced for the last three days is going to be hard, but is all necessary and I wouldn’t be doing it if I didn’t believe that we had to do it.”

Beshear told child care agencies on Saturday to develop a plan that would allow them to close with as little as 72 hours notice.

“We just have to do what it takes to lessen the spread of this coronavirus,” he said in Saturday’s announcement. “I don’t want to be the Governor that waits two weeks too late to take some of those steps.”
