For the third year, the Daviess County Animal Shelter is hosting its annual “Egg My Yard” fundraiser.

Cash, a pitbull mix at the shelter has high energy but it also has a bad kennel cough, which the shelter is treating with medicine.

The medicine that helps Cash recover from its canine infectious respiratory disease was purchased by funds raised by the shelter.

DCAS volunteer Jessica Smith said this is why the shelter continues to do “Egg My Yard.”

“It’s to help dogs like Cash try to find a home,” Smith said.

The fundraiser has generated about $3,500 for the shelter said Smith, who has spearheaded the fundraiser.

Volunteers from the shelter hide candy-filled eggs in people’s yards for Easter morning. Smith said everything is donated.

Funds raised help the shelter with such things as transport or medical needs.

“All the funds that bring in help dogs that may come in with kennel cough, if they have heartworm, that money treats the heartworm,” Smith said. “A simple heartworm treatment is anywhere from $500-$800, and quite a few dogs come in with heartworms.”

Last year, the shelter did about 50 yards and are hoping to do more this year. Orders should be placed by April 6 at 270-903-9163.
