Daviess County Public Schools board of education members reflected on some of the work teachers and staff have put in since COVID-19 hit Kentucky and forced schools to close.

Superintendent Matt Robbins reported during a regular meeting Thursday that DCPS provided breakfast and lunch to more than 6,500 students Wednesday.

DCPS announced last week that it would provide free breakfast and lunch meals to anyone 18 and under while schools are closed because of COVID-19.

Board Chair Tom Payne applauded the board and staff.

“As we respond to this global threat, principals, teachers and other educator professionals are working tirelessly to provide meaningful learning experiences for students even when kids are not in the classroom,” Payne said.

Payne said DCPS is committed to putting kids first while protecting the health and well-being of its employees.

“When this historic event is over — and right now it seems it will never be over — we will be able to reflect with pride upon the way Daviess County Public Schools has responded to this emergency,” Payne said.

Sara Harley, DCPS director of finance, reported the HVAC renovations at Deer Park Elementary and East View Elementary schools and a piping upgrade at College View Middle School, which were all started summer of 2019, have been completed.

A field lighting project at Burns Middle School was also completed.
