Plenty of teachers are missing their students after schools in Owensboro were forced to close due to the spread of COVID-19.

So teachers in the Owensboro Public Schools district prepared a parade to surprise their students.

OPS elementary school teachers drove Monday morning in their cars through neighborhoods while honking their horns. Some of the cars had signs attached that read “Sutton kids rock!”

“I know that our teachers have really been missing the kids,” said Krista Thompson, principal at Sutton Elementary School. “So our inspiration was how can we spread joy and see our kids and see their smiling faces. So we thought why not do a drive-by and see our kids.”

Monday marked what was supposed to be the second and final week of school being closed. OPS has extended school closures to April 17 at the recommendation of Gov. Andy Beshear to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Some students ran out of their homes and waved at their teachers as they drove by. Riding at that the front of the line was Luna, the school’s therapy dog.

“I know Luna’s been waiting for this all day and so she’s so excited,” said Kristin Tines, a counselor at SES. “That connection is going to be very meaningful to them.”
