The City of Owensboro and the Parks & Recreation team are implementing cancellations and closures effective today through April 5 as a precautionary measure to minimize transmission of the COVID-19 virus.

According to a statement released Sunday on Facebook, all Owensboro Parks & Recreation leagues, programs, lessons or events during that time have been cancelled.

Additionally, the Edge Ice Center, Dugan Best Recreation Center and Owensboro Parks & Recreation Administrative Center will all be closed. Any currently scheduled program, private rental and/or birthday party at those facilities are cancelled.

Outdoor parks will continue on normal operating hours. This includes greenspace parks such as Legion, Moreland and Smothers, as well as Hillcrest Golf Course and Ben Hawes Golf Course. Shelter or Gazebo reservations during this time will take place as scheduled. If that direction changes, notification will be made as soon as possible.

The City will re-evaluate prior to April 5 to determine if extending the closure will be necessary.

For any league or program that required registration such as ice skating lessons or volleyball leagues, expect an email regarding rescheduling plans or fee refunds. Below is a list of events, programs, leagues and lessons cancelled:

“Please understand the City is acting in an abundance of caution in an effort to protect the public and employees from transmission of the COVID-19 virus, and asks all to remain patient during this time,” Sunday’s statement reads. “Today’s actions are focused on protecting the citizens of Owensboro. … During this time, we will be taking additional measures for deep cleaning, sanitizing and disinfecting our recreational facilities, as well as additional safety measures for our staff.”
