The fifth annual Bourbon and Bluegrass Century Ride returns Aug. 1. at O.Z. Tyler Distillery.

The event is a charity hosted by Bicycle Owensboro in support of Dream Riders of Kentucky, which is a nonprofit that provides equine-assisted activities and therapies to individuals of all ages with disabilities.

“Every year it has gotten a little bigger, and we’ve gotten a little better putting it on,” said Becky Martin, president of Bicycle Owensboro. “It’s really a great venue, and I think it’s a great opportunity to promote the Owensboro-Daviess County area.”

The ride begins and ends at O.Z. Tyler Distillery, 10 Distillery Rd. There are routes and distances for every rider from beginner to competitive cyclists. This year, people can choose from the 100-mile century, the 62-mile century and a 33-mile ride.

Rides offer a few rolling hills and many miles of flat, rural roads through scenic western Kentucky including views of the Ohio and Green Rivers. Strategically placed rest stops will be marked throughout the route to provide cyclists an opportunity to rest and repair their bicycles.

For the first time, a cycling jersey is available for purchase.

In 2019, 555 cyclists participated in the ride, who came from 15 different states. The youngest rider was 11 and the oldest 78. Many riders came to Owensboro the day before the ride and stayed through the weekend.

“Many not only enjoyed the ride, but stayed in area hotels, shopped, and enjoyed Friday After 5 and other attractions,” said Kelly Flick, DRK’s executive director. “I am very excited about the event.”

The ride continues to be the largest fundraising source for DRK, according to organizers, bringing in more than $21,000 last year.

“It takes a lot, it takes a good 100 people to set it up every year,” Martin said. “There have been people helping every year. So kind of getting down, helping with registration, it’s just amazing what people can do.”
