With his daily updates about the coronavirus pandemic, Gov. Andy Beshear has become an afternoon staple in households across Kentucky.

Three local businesswomen noticed the widespread support of the governor, and they decided to create merchandise honoring Beshear.

Be The Light Candle Company has a candle called “The Andy” for sale.

Owner Jill Carrico said she was watching Beshear give his daily press briefing when the idea came to her.

“Let’s have some fun with this because everybody needs a little happiness right around right now,” she said, saying that “everybody loves candles.”

The aroma is a combination of fresh air, sea salt, amber, a hint of vanilla and a bit of citrus. The candles are all-natural, hand-poured coconut wax.

Carrico said she completed 50 orders over the last week. Ten percent of April’s proceeds will be donated to Owensboro’s Mount Calvary Baptist Church.

Another small business, Say It Southern Monograms and More, has made and sold more than 100 Beshear T-shirts in the last two weeks.

Owner Amy Spurrier said people are loving the Beshear products, adding that “Live at five with Andy” and “We Love Our Governor” were some of the favorites.

“Definitely the Beshear shirts have been our best seller during all this,” Spurrier said. “This community has been so supportive so far.”

Though her shop is closed right now, Spurrier said she was fortunate to still be able to sell the shirts online.

Brittney Gaddis, a local graphic designer, has also designed a T-shirt to raise money for Beshear’s Team Kentucky Fund, which provides assistance to Kentuckians who have been financially impacted by the COVID-19 emergency.

Gaddis said 24 shirts were sold, and nearly $300 will be donated from the last round of orders. Visit teamky.itemorder.com to support.
