Kindergarten teacher Meredith Jarboe and her two sons started their Monday morning with an unexpected surprise that left them in tears.

A procession of cars with people honking, waving and holding signs that read “We love you Jarboe Family!” greeted the Jarboe and boys at their front porch.

Friends, teachers and staff at East View Elementary School, Daviess County Middle and High schools had planned a parade to show support for the family on the one-year anniversary of the death of John Jarboe, who died of cancer.

Meredith, a teacher at EVES, said she was only expecting her friend to stop by for something special.

“I expected maybe something with the school, but I never expected all the family and friends,” she said while holding back tears. “(I feel) loved and grateful, blessed to have so many people in our lives that love us and that take care of us.”

Some people blew kisses and shouted “We love you!” as they drove by. John’s parents, who live a few houses down the street, also came outside to wave at the caravan.

Jo Beth Grigsby, who organized the plan, said the parade was the best option to show support for the Jarboe family while also following self-distancing guidelines during COVID-19.

“(We) want to let them know that we are still supporting them and loving them and praying for them during this time,” Grigsby said. “We also are going to let John’s light still shin. It will not diminish even though its been a year. We’re still here to support him and support the family.”
