Along with picking up their sack lunches on Monday, families were also able to take home free bicycle helmets from the Owensboro High School feeding site.

Owensboro Health partnered with Owensboro Public Schools to encourage bicycle safety this summer by donating 208 bicycle helmets, which were distributed at OHS during its summer feeding program.

The helmets went quickly, but any that remain will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis during the next meal pickup from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday

“It’s been going very well. We’ve had a lot of people who have taken the helmets,” said Lisa McCarty, chief operation officer at OPS. “People are very appreciative of the donation.”

McCarty said this isn’t the first time OH has donated bicycle helmets to the school district and that OPS is happy for the partnership.

Local grandmother Helen Wright heard about the helmet giveaway and came to pick up two with her grandchildren while their mother was at work.

“They ride their bikes in the yard about every Saturday,” Wright said. “I’m thankful.”

Helmets were organized by size and approximate age groups so parents could select the helmets most likely to fit their children while adhering to physical distancing guidelines.

OH had also donated over 200 bicycle helmets to Daviess County Public Schools in May to give to its students.
