KSP says man committed suicide, officer discharged weapon

Editor’s note: OT does not typically report on suicides but did so because of the public nature of this situation.

One person died after committing suicide following a traffic stop Sunday morning in the area of West Parrish Avenue and Walnut Street.

The incident was originally described by officials as an “officer-involved shooting” because an officer discharged his firearm at the time of the incident, even though it was not the cause of death.

Kentucky State Police handled the investigation. KSP Public Information Officer Corey King said their agency was contacted by Owensboro Police Department “in regards to a shooting involving one of their officers as well as a suspect.”

King said the suspect eventually exited his vehicle with a gun to his head and was walking down several streets before an officer in his patrol vehicle came face-to-face with the suspect.

“At that point, the suspect shot himself,” King said. “Somewhere in this incident, the officer who was directly in front of him discharged his weapon from the vehicle.”

The Daviess County Coroner pronounced the suspect dead on scene. Daviess County Coroner’s Office and the Kentucky Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy Monday morning in Louisville.

The name of the suspect and officer will be released at a later time. The investigation is still ongoing.
