More than half of the initial $1.54 million owed to Owensboro Municipal Utilities in past-due expenses because of COVID-19 has been paid back through customers’ payment plans. Roughly 1,200 customers are still on plans to pay back the remaining $753,250 owed.
General Manager Kevin Frizzell, provided the update during their monthly meeting, noting there were 1,861 accounts initially created.
Additionally, Frizzell said there are 335 accounts owning a total of $72,420 eligible for disconnect — 314 of which are residential. Disconnections are prioritized based on the largest and longest unpaid balances.
Officials are still encouraging customers in need to apply for state and federal funds that can assist them with rent and utilities. One such program currently taking applications is the Home Eviction Relief Fund.
Frizzell said OMU hopes to open the customer service lobby to the public in early May. For now, those needing assistance can still utilize the drive-thru window. Other options include online bill payment and payment-by-phone.
