On Tuesday night, the Owensboro volleyball program picked up their second district win of the season, sweeping Apollo 3-0 (25-12, 25-14, 24-21) at home. The Lady Devils relied on consistent effort on both sides of the ball to tally the win.
Owensboro (14-8, 2-3 9th district) was led in kills by Brooklyn Williams with eight, while Mia Covington led the team with a game-high 15 assists. Maya Joska led the team in blocks with six, while Chase Mather recorded 12 digs.
“I thought the girls came out with great energy and played more consistently today,” said Owensboro head coach Melissa Hibbs. “We gound a lot of success on the serving line; I think a game-changer for us was that we did a great job setting the block, forcing Apollo to change their offense.”
Apollo (8-13, 0-5 9th district) was led offensively by Havannah John with 12 kills, while Ahalia Ramirez tallied 12 assists. John also led the E-Gals in blocks with two while Abby Spong recorded five digs.
The 9th district — consisting of Apollo, Daviess County, Owensboro, and Owensboro Catholic — are consistently among the top teams in the region, making for a challenging and competitive district tournament. Cross county foe, Trinity, is also consistently at the top of the mix.
Apollo and Owensboro will travel to Paducah this weekend to participate in McCracken County’s Quad State Tournament in preparation for the upcoming post-season.
