Candidates can officially file for office in the 2022 election starting today, and nearly every office is on the ballot for Daviess County.

The deadline to file is Jan. 7 and the cost to file is $50. For any questions concerning the candidate filing, contact the Daviess County election office at 270-240-5771.

All four seats on the Owensboro City Commission will be on the ballot. They are each two-year terms. Mayor Tom Watson is midway through a four-year term, so his position will not be on the ballot.

All three county commissions seats and the county Judge-Executive will also be on the ballot. Other county offices with seats up for grabs include the county clerk, county attorney, jailer, coroner, surveyor, property value administrator, and sheriff. All county offices are four-year terms.

Also at the local level, some of the city and county school board positions are up for election. School board positions feature four-year staggered terms.

Most state-level seats are also on the ballot — including Sen. Matt Castlen’s seat (four-year term); all state House seats (two-year terms); and all judge’s seats.

Several people have already announced their intentions to run for an office, while a handful of current elected officials are not seeking re-election.

Judge-Executive Al Mattingly, County Attorney Claud Porter, and Sheriff Keith Cain said they will not run again.

Central Daviess County Commissioner Charlie Castlen plans to run for judge-executive, meaning his commission seat will be open for someone else to take.

Michael King plans to run for the Central Daviess County Commission seat.

Janie Marksberry plans to run for the East Daviess County Commission seat.

Michael Johnson plans to challenge incumbent Rep. DJ Johnson for the 13th District State Representative seat.

John Burlew plans to run for county attorney.

Major Barry Smith plans to run for sheriff. He has been appointed to serve as sheriff upon Cain’s retirement in December, but would have to be elected to keep the position next year.

Tonya Payne plans to challenge incumbent Leslie McCarty for the position of Daviess County Clerk.
