Many cell phone owners in Owensboro and across western Kentucky are having difficulty placing or receiving phone calls. If you have access to Wi-Fi, you may be able to enable Wi-Fi calling on your iPhone or Android phone to regain some calling features.

According to Apple‘s support website, the following cell phone providers in the area may support Wi-Fi calling:

  • AT&T
  • Consumer Cellular
  • Cricket
  • Metro by T-Mobile
  • Mint Mobile
  • Spectrum Mobile
  • Sprint, now a part of T-Mobile
  • T-Mobile USA
  • Ting, TracFone / Straight Talk
  • US Cellular
  • Verizon Wireless.

iPhone: Make calls using Wi-Fi

From Apple’s support website:
When your iPhone has a low cellular signal, use Wi-Fi Calling to make and receive calls through a Wi-Fi network.

  1. On your iPhone, go to Settings  > Cellular.
  2. If your iPhone has Dual SIM, choose a line (below Cellular Plans).
  3. Tap Wi-Fi Calling, then turn on Wi-Fi Calling on This iPhone.
  4. Enter or confirm your address for emergency services.
  5. Note: Emergency calls on your iPhone are routed through cellular service when available. In the event that cellular service isn’t available, and you have enabled Wi-Fi Calling, emergency calls may be made over Wi-Fi, and your device’s location information may be used for emergency calls to aid response efforts, regardless of whether you enable Location Services. Some carriers may use the address you registered with the carrier when signing up for Wi-Fi Calling as your location. When connected to Wi-Fi calling, your iPhone may not receive emergency alerts.

Android: Make calls over Wi-Fi

From Google’s support website:
In some cases, you can call people over a Wi-Fi connection instead of a mobile carrier. Not all carriers support calls over Wi-Fi.

  1. Open the Phone app.
  2. Tap More And then Settings.
  3. Tap Calls.
  4. Tap Wi-Fi calling. If you don’t see this option, it’s because your carrier doesn’t support this feature.
    • You can use Wi-Fi calling without a service on some carriers.

Once Wi-Fi calling is enabled, you should be able to place and receive phone calls over Wi-Fi the same way you would if you were using cellular towers.
