Fran Marseille announced at the Owensboro Rotary Club that this year’s Friday After 5 will bring a range of acts that cater to various crowds each week this summer. They’re also hosting a unique challenge this year — the “Git Up” dance-off competition. Groups will compete to see who can best perform the dance to the viral song The Git Up by Blanco Brown — with the winners getting to show off their moves on stage before his concert in August.

As was announced Wednesday, Brown is coming to Owensboro for Friday After 5 on Aug. 19. The Git Up — certified 11x Platinum across 3 countries — claimed the top spot in charts globally with nearly 4 billion views across social platforms.

FA5 is partnering with United Way of Ohio Valley for the dance challenge.

FA5 Executive Director Fran Marseille said that there are different categories to compete in:

  • Nonprofits, Schools, Dance Students
  • Elected Officials, City & County Employees, Owensboro Chamber Staff & Visit Owensboro staff
  • Police, Sheriff & Fire Departments
  • Health Departments & Medical Facility employees
  • Sponsors of Friday After 5
  • Media Outlets – TV, Radio, Newspapers, Online Outlets

Submissions for the dance competition will be accepted from May 20 to Aug. 1 using a Google Form and emailing to [email protected]

Each participant video will be showcased on social media for community members to vote on.

The winner of each category will then get to showcase their dance on stage at to “open” for Brown. The group who gets the loudest cheers on stage will be crowned the overall winner.

After the winner in each category is opened for Blanco Brown, the winner will be determined by the loudest cheers from the crowd.

FA5 kicks off May 20 at the Bluegrass Museum and Hall of Fame with the Friday After 5 5K. Once the race is concluded, the Beatles Rock Show will commence.

“We’re not trying to copy the Beatles, we just are gonna rock the Beatles away that night, so we hope you join us over at our brand new location at the Holiday Inn,” Marseille said.

This year also marks a different approach in how FA5 will bring acts to the weekly event downtown.

The different stages will be geared toward different crowds throughout the summer and attract different bands to reflect that change. For example, Lure Seafood and Grille joined the fun and will be hosting music geared toward the younger crowd at their location.

Marseille also said one of the new acts that are booked to make an appearance includes country singer Coffey Anderson but they still plan to have some returning acts like The Motels.

They previously announced they would be “moving west” this summer, including moving their main concert stage from the RiverPark Center to the Holiday Inn and having stages closer together.

Another change is that Glenn’s Gospel has been renamed Glenn’s Spirit on the River this year and now will be held at the First Baptist Church. With the name change, Marseille said they are allowing church departments to come and join in on the fun.
