One person will be chosen today to serve as interim City Commissioner through the end of 2023. A special election will be held this November to determine who will fill that seat for the remainder of the term, though the filing deadline is less than a month away.

A total of 30 people originally submitted an application to serve as interim commissioner, though two of those withdrew since Friday. During a public City Commission meeting Monday, 18 of the applicants were interviewed. The remainder will be interviewed tonight.

Each of the applicants faced/will face the same questions asking about their involvement in the community, what their top priorities of the community are, and if they will file for the November election should they be selected for the position in the interim. Each applicant was given 2 minutes to answer the questions.

Following the interviews tonight, the City Commission will go into closed session to discuss applicants. The Commission will return to open session to announce their selection.

“We will reconvene in open session for the Board of Commissioners to vote to select the commissioner to fill the vacancy. While the vacancy will be filled (Tuesday), it is difficult to predict the time as it will depend on when and how long it takes the consensus to become clear,” said City Manager Nate Pagan.

The selected applicant will serve until the end of 2023. Whoever wins the special election this November would serve for the entirety of 2024, when the term officially ends. The filing deadline for the November election is June 6.
