Upwards of 30 applications have already been submitted to fill the City Commission seat left vacant by the death of Larry Maglinger. City Manager Nate Pagan is currently exploring ways to make the interview process as efficient as possible, as a selection must be made in the coming weeks.

To start, Pagan said the City Commission is currently seeing if it is appropriate to have a discussion in a closed session before returning to the public with the nomination. As it stands, the Commission is expected to conduct interviews, discuss, and make a selection all during open session.

Pagan said with the unexpectedly large pool of applicants, the City is also looking for advice on completing the interviews over two nights rather than just on May 16.

Each interview will have the same set of questions, Pagan said. If the interview process is split over two days, Pagan said that they will make a nomination on the second day after hearing all applicants.

The City is accepting applications until May 11 at 5 p.m., both in-person and digitally. Applications are available here or can be picked up at City Hall during business hours.

All applicants will be interviewed during a Special Called Meeting of the City Commission at 6 p.m. on May 16, unless the City alters the current plans. That meeting will be open to the public.

The selected applicant will fill the seat immediately and will serve as interim until January 1, 2024. In the November special election, the public will vote for someone to take the seat for the remainder of the term, which ends December 31, 2024.
