Owensboro Municipal Utilities is nearly finished with its Fiber to the Homes initiative and has about 4,000 residential subscribers already for the internet service.
Director of Telecommunications Chris Poynter recently said the plan is to be finished with installation by the end of Fiscal Year 2024. The remaining two sectors are neighborhoods primarily north of Parrish Avenue.
The next section they will focus on is Sub J, which is west of Frederica Street and north of Parrish Avenue, with some portions north of 9th and 4th streets.
“We are over near the Industrial Drive area, and we are putting in the distribution infrastructure for the residential Internet services up over there,” Poynter said. “We’re working over there now, and we’re working our way to the east.”
Poynter said OMU is also working closely with the City of Owensboro to optimize the network provided to the City.
The telecommunications team is working on getting small businesses and other commercial partners as they grow their memberships.
