A small child was struck by gunfire Monday morning in what authorities say was likely a targeted shooting at an occupied home, according to the Owensboro Police Department.

OPD said the child, whose age was not provided, was taken from the scene by AMR and later transferred to Norton’s Children’s Hospital in Louisville. The latest report indicated the child is in stable condition, according to OPD.

OPD first announced at approximately 6:30 a.m. that they were investigating a firearm discharge that was believed to be an isolated incident in the 700 block of Elm Street. No other details were provided at that time.

The update was provided at approximately 11:45 a.m.

“The investigation into this morning’s firearm discharge determined that this was likely a targeted location, with multiple gunshots fired into an occupied home,” OPD’s update reads. “… Multiple detectives with our Criminal Investigations Division have responded to the scene to further investigate this unnecessary act.”

OPD said their Evidence Collection Unit was called to process the scene and has recovered multiple shell casings.

“We understand that there are more questions than answers but we ask that you be patient as this investigation unfolds,” OPD said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact OPD at 270-687-8888 or leave an anonymous tip with Crimestoppers at (270) 687-8484.
