Daviess County and Owensboro Catholic closed out the week strong, as the Lady Panthers grabbed a pair of wins and the Lady Aces pulled out a win in a pitcher’s duel with Muhlenberg County.

Daviess County vs. Goreville, Marshall County

The Lady Panthers added two wins to their record on Saturday, defeating Goreville and Marshall County in the McCracken County Early Bird Tournament.

Daviess County’s offense took control of the game early, getting two runs in the bottom of the second thanks to an RBI single from senior Katie Mewes and a wild pitch. The following inning the Lady Panthers chipped in five runs, starting with an RBI single by junior Jessie Daniels.

Eighth grader Annie Newman followed that up with a two-out RBI single to make it a 4-0 game, before an error led to three runs for Daviess County. Meanwhile, junior Alexis Jackson was enjoying a solid start in the circle, striking out five while giving up no runs and no hits in four innings.

The Lady Panthers continued to add some insurance runs in the bottom half of the fourth, getting two thanks to an RBI double from senior Kinsey Vergason. With plenty of offense behind them, eighth grader Sophia Cain and freshman Alyssa Rhineburger closed out the game in relief.

Cain went two innings and gave up one hit while striking out four runs, while Rhineburger allowed no runs and no hits in an inning pitched as well.

Daviess County followed this strong offensive game up in its matchup with Marshall County, grabbing a narrow 3-1 victory.

Earning the two wins to close out the tournament, the Lady Panthers now sit at 3-1 overall going into their first home game of the season against South Warren at 6 p.m. on Monday.

Owensboro Catholic vs. Muhlenberg County

Getting a strong performance in the circle from junior Brooke Hamilton, the Lady Aces snapped a two-game losing streak with a 3-1 win over Muhlenberg County in front of their home crowd.

Owensboro Catholic took control of the game early, opening up scoring in the game in the bottom of the second. Junior Lilli Grant led off the inning with a double, which was followed by an RBI double from junior Addison Tignor to make it a 1-0 game.

The Lady Mustangs nearly escaped the second inning without any more damage, but a two-out two-run double by senior Camille Conkright gave the Lady Aces a 3-0 lead going into the third.

This set up the game for Brooke Hamilton to take over, as she mowed through Muhlenberg County’s lineup throughout the game. She allowed one run thanks to a homerun in the top of the seventh, but that is all she would surrender along with five hits while striking out eight en route to the 3-1 win for Owensboro Catholic.

Junior Bailey Hamilton and Addison Tignor led the way with two hits each, while Addison recorded one RBI on the day. Conkright led the way in run production, recording two RBIs for the Lady Aces.

The win moves Owensboro Catholic to 3-3 overall, as they will have a district matchup with Owensboro awaiting them at 5:30 p.m. on Monday.
