Volleyball recap (Sept. 19): DCHS, THS, OHS

The Lady Raiders opened up the week by grabbing their ninth win in their last ten games over Owensboro, while Daviess County grabbed a sweep of Union County.

Daviess County vs. Union County

The Lady Panthers grabbed their second straight sweep on Monday, defeating Union County at home 3-0 (25-10, 25-9, 25-4).

Senior Josie Newcom led the offense in kills with 17, while senior Adylan Ayer returned from injury and added eight kills in her first game of the season. Senior Sydney Mills led the way in assists with 21, while senior Lexi Owen followed close behind with 10.

Mills also added four aces, while senior Emma Rogers added six. Defensively it was seniors Taylor Roberts (10), Sydney DeRossitt (7) and Mary Grayce Hill (6) who led the way with a combined 23 digs of the team’s 43.

Daviess County now sits at 11-7 overall with back-to-back wins, as they will get right back to work on Tuesday when they host Ohio County at 7 p.m.

Owensboro vs. Trinity (Whitesville)

Despite a strong start by the Lady Devils on Monday, Trinity (Whitesville) was able to bounce back after the opening set to grab a 3-1 road win (23-25, 25-13, 25-12, 25-22).

Junior Hannah Nash led the Lady Raiders offense with 20 kills, while junior Georgia Howard added 11, sophomore Addison Mills added nine and sophomore Kenzie McDowell added eight. Senior Josie Aull had her hands all over the match, assisting on 50 of the team’s 51 kills.

For Owensboro’s offense it was senior Brooklyn Williams who tallied 13 kills, while sophomore Addie Travis and senior Mia Covington had seven each. Covington also added nine assists, while sophomore Ava Fincher led the team with 13.

The Lady Devils struggled defensively however, only recording seven digs and tallying 13 blocks as a team. Trinity on the other hand was a digging machine, recording 71 total with sophomore Caroline Hall (20), senior Abby Payne (17) and Howard (13) all finishing in double figures.

The Lady Raiders improved to 20-5 overall with the win, now turning their focus toward another road matchup on Tuesday with Breckinridge County at 7:30 p.m. Meanwhile, the Lady Devils sit at 4-12 overall after suffering their ninth straight loss, as they will look to turn things around against Warren East at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
