A week removed from a 56-7 blowout victory over Graves County, Owensboro football will look to improve to 5-0 in district play against the Grayson County Cougars on Friday night.

The Red Devil defense started out red hot, as seniors Jeremiah Goodwin and Xander Early had key tackles for loss on third and fourth down to force a turnover on downs on the first possession of the game.

Senior Kenyatta Carbon rushed for 44 yards on Owensboro’s first offensive snap and punched it in the endzone later in the drive to put the first points on the board. Early also got in on the action on the offensive side of the ball, rushing for a touchdown to put the Devils up 14-0 early.

The game got out of hand pretty quickly, as another rushing touchdown from Carbon and a receiving touchdown from Khalil Rodgers would give Owensboro a comfortable 28-0 in the second quarter.

It was all Red Devils from that point on. They scored touchdowns on all three sides of the football, all while getting a lot of different players involved on the offense. Head coach Jay Fallin mentioned the importance of carrying this over to this Friday’s matchup.

“Executing at a high level in all three phases of the game is a key to winning this Friday,” Fallin said. “Last week’s play is a result of a great week of practice combined with focus, concentration, and effort. We will have to duplicate that each week to continue to play at that level.”

Owensboro will travel to Grayson County (4-4, 3-1) Friday night to face a Cougars squad who are currently on a three-game winning streak.

“They are a well-coached team,” Fallin said. “Coach [Bryan] Jones puts his kids in a position to be successful with a sound scheme and expectation of discipline.”

The Cougars are led by a running back tandem featuring Hunter Felty and Jeren VanMeter. The two have combined for most of Grayson County’s offense on the season, totaling 944 total yards and 15 touchdowns.

The 1st district of class 5A has been a breeze for the Red Devils once again this season, as they’re currently outscoring their opponents 241-22. They hope to continue their dominance in district play on Friday night at 7 p.m.

“This is our final district game,” Fallin said. “With a win we can finish district play undefeated and put ourselves in a position to host at least two playoff games.”
