Apollo boys soccer is beginning a new era in the 2023 season, as Nikos Agisilaou—who has countless local ties including running the Street Soccer Bowl in Owensboro—has been hired as their new head coach.

Agisilaou said that opportunities like this don’t come often, so when he heard the buzz from some friends that it was open he made sure to see if it would be the right fit for him. Having served as an assistant coach at Madisonville-North Hopkins under his brother Christakis for the past five years, he felt it was time to come back to a familiar place.

“It feels great,” Agisilau said. “I’m super excited for this opportunity to be the next coach in the program. This was my dad’s first head coaching job in the 80’s so that makes it that much more special.”

Nikos had also served as a volunteer assistant with Owensboro in 2018, as his local ties stretched into club soccer having coached Owensboro United, Evansville Fire and the BG Elite in recent years. This will be his first head coaching job though, something he’s very eager to get work on.

“A new start for me is special,” Agisilaou said. “I am looking forward to getting to know my players and staff more as this will be a fun year. I hope to instill my heart and soul in these boys as we share passion similarities. I hope they will instill the same in me as well.”

Agisilaou is looking forward to building an Eagles program that people will respect and enjoy watching compete in the 9th District, thankful to have the chance to make an impact on numerous student athletes in the upcoming season.

“First, I would like to thank God,” Agisilaou said. “I would not be here today without him. I want to thank Josh, Mason, and Danny as they put their trust in me to be in this position. I would like to thank each and every player and coach in my career who have helped me along the way and put me in this position. I would like to thank my family for their ongoing support they’ve always shown me. I would like to thank my brother (current head coach at Madisonville North-Hopkins) for making me a better person and coach. I would like to thank my dad for instilling in me to be the best version of myself in this lifetime. I would like to thank my mom for instilling in me her heart and passion even though she is no longer with us, I know she will be watching over me forever.”
