The Lady Raiders couldn’t slow down Grayson County at the plate in a home loss on Tuesday, while the Lady Devils’ steady effort at the plate and in the field helped them top Union County.

Owensboro vs Union County

The Lady Devils squeaked out a narrow 6-5 win at home on Tuesday, getting a number of players involved offensively late to defeat Union County.

Owensboro struck first in the contest, taking advantage of an error to start the game and later getting a one-run single from junior Sophie Moorman after a sac bunt from junior Emmi Connor to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. The Lady Devils and Bravettes traded a run back and forth in the top of the third and the bottom of the fourth, but it was Union County who grabbed momentum with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth that knotted things up at 3-3.

Owensboro quickly bounced back once again though, getting four singles—the final two from sophomores Ellington Embry and Kirsten Tindle to drive one in each and take a 4-3 lead into the sixth. The Bravettes evened things right back up with an RBI groundout in the top of the sixth, but an RBI single from Moorman and an RBI double from senior K’Asia Palmer put them back out in front 6-4 heading into the final inning.

The Lady Devils still found themselves in trouble though, as a leadoff single, one-out double and an error by Moorman plated one run to make it 6-5 and put runners on second and third with one out. Tindle was able to bear down though, getting a short fly out to center that kept the runners where they were and a groundout to secure the win.

Tindle allowed three earned runs—five total—in her complete-game victory, surrendering 12 hits while walking none and striking out one. Tindle also joined Embry, Palmer and sophomore Addison Hill with an RBI each, while Moorman led the way with a pair.

Owensboro takes their third straight win into a district matchup at home at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, wrapping up a prior matchup with Owensboro Catholic that was postponed due to injury.

Trinity (Whitesville) vs Grayson County

A strong start and finish offensively for the Lady Cougars stifled Trinity (Whitesville), leading to a 7-5 road loss for the Lady Raiders to start the week.

Grayson County got off to a hot start with four runs in the first three innings of play, but Trinity was right on their tail with three of their own to make it a 4-3 game. An RBI single from sophomore Madison McDaniel in the bottom of the fourth and a leadoff solo homer from senior Abby Payne in the bottom of the fifth then quickly flipped the script, giving the Lady Raiders a 5-4 lead going into the sixth. But Grayson County switched the lead once again in the top of the sixth, as a myriad of hits led to three runs and eventually claimed the 7-5 win.

Seventh grader Sophie Hatfield took the loss, allowing two earned runs on five hits and two strikeouts in two innings of relief. Seventh grader Ella Morris led the way at the plate with a pair of RBIs, while Payne, Hatfield and McDaniel all chipped in one each.

The Lady Raiders fall to 11-14 overall with the loss, as they’ll now look to bounce back against Warren Central at 5:45 p.m. on Thursday.
