Kentucky Wesleyan’s Megan Matheis was the top freshman in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference as voted on the leagues head coaches. Matheis was also voted to the Great Midwest First Team. Trevecca’s Sydney McCormick earned the Elite 26 award. Ohio Dominican’s Braxton Downs and Hillsdale’s Joni Russell were voted the Great Midwest Athletic Conference player and pitcher of the year, respectively. The awards will be presented during the first day of the Great Midwest Softball Championship, which is being played in Findlay, Ohio.

Matheis is the third player under Head Coach Miles Mallette‘s tenure that has earned Freshman of the Year status. Jaylin Tidwell was awarded the honor in 2017 while Meredith Daunhauer was named the G-MAC’s top freshman in 2016.

Playing in 52 games at the hot corner, Matheis led the G-MAC with a batting average north of .450. She ranked second in the league with 41 RBIs and fifth with seven homeruns. The Matheis’ named is already populating the Wesleyan record book as she produced several single season marks.

Matheis ranks second all-time in batting average and set a single season record with a .659 slugging percentage. Her .492 on-base percentage this season ranks third all-time in school history while 74 hits sits in sixth place. Seven homeruns and 41 RBIs rank seventh in a KWC single season as well.
