The Lady Aces were on fire to start the Owensboro Catholic Classic, while Apollo split its first two games in the tournament and the Lady Devils fell at home to Butler County.

Owensboro Catholic vs Lyon County

The Lady Aces were clicking on all cylinders to kick off the Owensboro Catholic Classic on Friday, topping Lyon County 9-0 behind a strong pitching performance from freshman Hannah Robbins.

Owensboro Catholic got on the board in the top of the first with a two-out RBI double from junior Ruth Jones, while Jones also scored on a wild pitch in the top of the third to give them an early 2-0 lead. This was all the Lady Aces would need as well, peppering the other seven insurance runs just being the cherry on top of a six-inning complete-game shutout from Robbins to win 9-0.

Robbins allowed just three hits and three walks on Friday, striking out nine while keeping Lyon County scoreless en route to the win. Hannah also had an RBI alongside Jones, senior Bailey Hamilton and junior Maci Merritt, while senior Lilli Grant led the way with a pair of RBIs.

The Lady Aces improve to 18-7 overall with the win, as they get right back to work on Saturday against Madisonville-North Hopkins at 3 p.m.

Owensboro vs Butler County

The Lady Devils weren’t able to muster up enough offense on Friday, falling to Butler County at home 8-3.

A barrage of hits and three Owensboro errors helped the Lady Bears set the tone for the game early, getting a run in the first and four in the second to take a 5-0 lead. The Lady Devils were able to get on the board thanks to a single from sophomore Addison Hill and an error in the bottom of the third, but they would go on to score just two more runs in the bottom of the sixth and ultimately lost 8-3.

Sophomore Kirsten Tindle started the game for Owensboro, taking the loss after giving up five unearned runs on six hits and a walk in two innings in the circle.

Senior K’Asia Palmer pitched the last five innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits, four walks and a pair of strikeouts. Meanwhile, sophomore Alyssa Rhineburger was the only Lady Devil with an RBI.

Owensboro falls to 8-18 overall with the loss, as they’ll look to bounce back on Monday when they host Trinity (Whitesville) at 5:30 p.m.

Apollo vs Franklin-Simpson, Pulaski County

The E-gals split their first two games of the Owensboro Catholic Classic on Friday, falling to Franklin-Simpson 5-1 while defeating Pulaski County 5-0.

Apollo struggled to string together runs in the first game of the day, as Franklin-Simpson scored three runs in the first three innings of play—setting the tone for the game and leading to the 5-0 win. The E-gals were only outhit 11-8 on the day, but sophomore Abby Miles was the only player to record an RBI in the game.

Eighth grader Mollie Julian pitched the first three innings in her start, allowing three earned runs on seven hits, a walk and a pair of strikeouts. Freshman Taylor Clark pitched the last three innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits.

Apollo was able to flip the script in its following game, jumping ahead in the top of the second thanks to an RBI single from Miles and an error to make it a 2-0 game. A pair of hits and an error led to another pair of runs in the top of the third, while a leadoff triple by senior Morgan Julian and an RBI double from freshman Arianna Ramirez gave the E-gals a 5-0 lead in the top of the fifth.

And that was all they would need too, as Apollo’s freshman Hannah Holder and senior Emmie Bullington held Pulaski County scoreless to win 5-0. Holder allowed no runs on four hits and no walks in four innings, while Bullington allowed two hits and three walks while striking out four in two innings of relief.

Ramirez and Miles led the way at the plate, chipping in an RBI each in the second game of their doubleheader. The E-gals move to 12-10 after the split, as they’ll look to finish the weekend strong against Madisonville-North Hopkins at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.
