Five local students have been selected to receive 2026 Dust Bowl scholarships, presented Saturday during the 53rd Annual Dust Bowl.
Each recipient received a $500 scholarship in recognition of their academic achievement, community involvement, and commitment to serving others.
This year’s recipients are:

- Jaiden Griffin
- Jordan Noah Stinnett
- LaShay Vera
- Eliza Jobi Kline
The scholarship initiative began in 2025 through a partnership among the Dust Bowl, Owensboro Times, PeezO’s Pizza, and longtime Dust Bowl supporter Gus Johnson. The program was created to honor the legacy of the late Larry “Chick” Owen while investing in local students who exemplify the values of service, leadership, and community involvement.
This year, the scholarship program expanded from four recipients to five. The additional scholarship was established by Larry Owen Jr., John Kirkpatrick, and Scott Kramer, with support from anonymous donors who made the award possible.
“My dad loved the Dust Bowl and everything it stood for — bringing the community together, lifting people up, and giving back,” said Larry Owen Jr., owner of PeezO’s Pizza. “Continuing these scholarships is a meaningful way to honor his legacy while helping young people pursue their goals.”
Recipients were selected through an application process that highlighted students’ community involvement, character, academic aspirations, and commitment to making a positive impact.
“The Dust Bowl has always represented more than basketball,” said John Kirkpatrick, assistant editor of the Owensboro Times. “It’s about tradition, community, and investing in the next generation. We’re proud to continue recognizing students who embody those values while honoring Chick’s legacy, and it’s exciting to see this scholarship program continue to grow.”
Now in its 53rd year, the Dust Bowl remains one of Owensboro’s signature summer traditions, bringing together generations of players, fans, and supporters while giving back to the community through initiatives such as these scholarships.
